The complete code for script perms.R is presented in Listing 1. I clicked File | Save As and saved the (currently empty) script as perms.R in directory C:\PermsUsingR on my machine. To create the demo script, I clicked File | New Script on the Rgui menu bar.
You can clear the startup messages in the Console window with a Ctrl+L. On some systems you'll need to right-click and select "Run as administrator" from the context menu. Then double-click on file Rgui.exe and the Rgui shell with an R Console window will launch. To launch the Rgui program, open a file explorer and navigate to the C:\Program Files\R\R-3.x.y\bin\圆4 directory. The demo program (technically a script because R is interpreted) uses R version 3.4.2, but any 3.x version will work. You can accept all the configuration defaults and installation is very quick. Click on the Run button presented to you by your browser to launch the installer. Do an Internet search for "Install R" and you'll find a page on the Web site with a link labeled "Download R 3.x.y for Windows." Click that link and you'll get an option to run a self-extracting installer file named something like R-3.x.y-win.exe. If you don't have R on your system, installing R (and uninstalling) is very easy. Then I use the setwd function to set the working directory to the location of my demo R file, and then I use the source function to execute the perms.R demo script. I use the special R incantation rm(list=ls()) to remove all existing objects in the current workspace. Inside the shell, the window on the left is the R Console where you can issue interactive commands. The outer container window is the Rgui.exe shell. To get an idea of where this article is headed, take a look at the demo R session in Figure 1. Note that because most other programming languages use 0-based array indexing instead of the 1-based indexing used by R, in other languages a permutation of order n is one possible arrangement of the integers 0 through n-1 inclusive. For example, one permutation of order n = 5 is (3, 5, 1, 4, 2). In R, a permutation of order n is one possible rearrangement of the integers 1 through n inclusive.

Adding more then 50 files is hogging the GUI too. it's clicking from here to there to do things. Video and audio metadata is not copied, including tags. It only support basic codecs both audio and video. Enabling hardware accelerated encoded results in files with awful quality, even at high settings. Subtitles support is not working, or at least not on my system. If the source is matroska or mpeg2ts, the result is always plagued with audio lagging problems. The permutation perm can be given in disjoint cyclic form or as a permutation list. Permute reorders the elements of an expression but never changes its length.

Even the free Handbrake does a much better job. Permute works with any nonatomic expressions, operating on the first level of expressions. There appears to be no possibility for an average quality with acceptable file sizes and good quality. Only the very high quality settings do produce some sort of good results. Every preset resulted in stuttering playback!!! All the converted movies stutter on several occasions.
